About Zip06

What is Zip06?

Zip06 is the Web site for The Times Community News Group and Shore Publishing, LLC. It is powered by theday.com and has been created to provide greater and more immediate access to the news, information, people and conversations in the communities of southeastern Connecticut. Ultimately, Zip06 will become what you decide it will be by your contributions. Our goal is simple: we want Zip06 to grow dynamically so we can link together all of us who live, work, and play around here.

What material is appropriate for posting to the Zip06 community?

If you have information that would be of interest to your friends and neighbors, we want to help you share it. Zip06 features the award-winning news from Times and Shore staff writers, relevant news from The Day and theday.com, and local stories that your friends and neighbors have contributed from right down the street. This content includes information about event listings, club and civic meetings, school happenings, and…you tell us what else. All of this information is maintained through member blogs, photo galleries, and event listings. Each week, Times editors review member contributions looking for timely and relevant content to feature in the newspapers or to forward to staff reporters for additional follow-up.

What kind of material is NOT appropriate for posting to the Zip06 community?

Anything profane, obscene, or maliciously hateful is out. You may not include photographs containing nudity, or obscene, lewd, excessively violent, harassing, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable subject matter. As well, you may not post materials in a blatant attempt to sell products or solicit for money. More details can be found in our User Agreement.

What should I do if I see something inappropriate posted to the Zip06 community?

Report it immediately. You can e-mail Zip06help@theday.com to alert our staff to items submitted to Zip06 that you believe do not meet our User Guidelines. We want Zip06 to be a safe, stress-free, and spam-free online destination, and we need your help to make it so.

How do I invite friends to become members of the Zip06 community?

Send an e-mail to your friends with a link to Zip06.com if you want them to join the Zip06 community. Then all they need to do is register their own personal member account and join you on the site.

How do I remove my membership in the Zip06 community?

E-mail us at optoutZip06@theday.com with "remove" in the subject heading. Please include either your member name or the e-mail address you joined with and we will remove your profile within two business days.

Registration & Sign In

Do I have to join to access the Zip06 community?

No. You are, however, required to join as a member of Zip06 in order to post or reply to messages in the forums, maintain a blog, add photos to the gallery, comment on other member submissions and/or submit calendar events. To join, just click on the Join link at the top of any page and fill in the appropriate information. Following your submission, we will send a confirmation e-mail to your registered e-mail address.

How do I sign in?

Enter your registered username and password in the Member Login control found in the top right corner of all site pages. If you would like to be automatically logged into Zip06 when you visit, click on the checkbox next to "remember me." (Note: You must have cookies enabled for this feature. Your login information will be encrypted and stored in a cookie.) After you sign in, you will automatically be placed in the primary Zip06 community you set in the registration process.

I forgot my username and/or password.

Click the "forget password" link in the member login control found in the top right corner of all site pages. On the linked page, enter your registered e-mail address and click on “Recover Password.” We will send you both your username and a new password. What is a profile?

A profile is set up by you to control the personal information that is shared with other site visitors and manage how you view information within Zip06. This includes details about materials you have submitted to the site, personal information you wish to share on the site (e.g., your web address or weblog address, and many other settings.)

How do I edit my profile?

Click on the “Edit my profile” link found on your profile page to make changes to your profile.

What is the signature field in my Edit Profile area?

A signature is appended to the end of any contribution you make to the Zip06 Forums. You can edit your signature by going to the "Signature and Bio" tab in the Profile Editor area. You may also choose to turn off this feature through the Site Options tab in the Profile Editor.

How do I change my member bio?

You may change your member bio through the Edit Profile area. This bio will appear on your public profile for other members to read and will be displayed at the bottom of all blog, gallery and calendar event contributions you post to the site.

What is an avatar?

An avatar is an image that is displayed on your public profile and along with your contributions to Zip06. You are assigned a default avatar upon your member registration. After registration, you can assign a custom avatar (e.g. photo of yourself, an image you like, or Clip Art) to your profile.

How do I set my custom avatar?

Click on the “Edit my profile” link found on your profile page and then click on the ‘Avatar’ tab. You can then select a digital image file on your computer to load up to the site. While the system will automatically resize the image you provide, for best results the image you set as your avatar should be 80 pixels wide by 80 pixels wide. If you do not want an avatar to be displayed, go to the "Site Options" tab on your Member Profile page and click 'no' for "Enable user avatar."

How do I change my password?

Click on the “Edit my profile” link found on your profile page and then click on the ‘Password and Statistics’ tab.

How do I change my e-mail address?

Click on the “Edit my profile” link found on your profile page and then click on the "E-mail" tab. While we will never display your registered e-mail address, from this screen you can also choose to provide a public e-mail address, and even various instant messaging addresses.

What profile settings are required?

The only profile setting that is required is your valid e-mail address. This is the e-mail address that will be used in case you forget your username or password. The private e-mail address is never shared or displayed publicly. The remainder of the profile settings are optional.

What if I don't want my name displayed in the member lists?

Go to your Member Profile page and click on the "Site Options" tab, then click 'no' to "Display in member list." This will prevent your name from appearing in any member listings, including the listing of who is online. For further privacy information please review our complete Privacy Policy.

How do I view other user profiles?

To view the profile of other Zip06 Community members, click on their username wherever you see it as a link. You can also search for members by typing their username in the search feature.

Posting

How do I create a thread in the Zip06 community forums?

To start a new thread, choose the appropriate forum and click the "Write a New Post" button. Type a title for your thread in the subject box, type a message in the message box and then click the "Post" button.

How do I post a reply in the Zip06 community forums?

To post a reply to a thread, click the "Reply" button next to the message you would like to reply to. Your reply will have a default reply subject line and you can type your reply in the message box. If you want to respond to specific text from the original message, click on the "Quote" button, and that will add the text from the original post in your message. To submit your reply, click the "Post" button.

What are tags?

You can give your submission "tags", which is like keyword. Tags help readers find submissions that have something in common. You can assign as many tags as you wish to each submission.

Blogs

What is a blog?

Blog is short for weblog. A weblog is a journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. According to Wikipedia, “a typical Blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.” A July 2006 Pew Charitable Trust article reports that “Blogging is inspiring a new group of writers and creators to share their voices with the world." Life experiences, local politics and government, culture, sports, general news, current events, business, technology, religion, spirituality or faith, hobby, health, volunteering, education, photography, causes, passion and organizations are all possible topics of focus for your Zip06 blog. This also where you would post press releases about your organization.

How can I create my own blog?

Upon joining as a Zip06 member, a blog is automatically created for you. You can access your blog through the "My Blog" link in your Member Center control. Your blog will automatically be placed in the default Zip06 community you set in the registration process.

How can I view other members' blogs?

Click on the member's user name and it will take you to their Zip06 profile page. Once there, click on "View Member's User Name Blog."

How do I comment on other members' blogs?

Once in a member's blog, click on the post you want to comment on. Below the content of their blog submission is an area where you can leave a comment. You must sign in under your member account to comment on other member's blogs.

Can I control who can post comments to my blog items?

All Zip06 members have access to comment on your blog submissions. If you believe someone’s comments violate the Zip06 community User Guidelines please e-mail us at Zip06reportabuse@theday.com.

Images

What file types can I post to the site?

You can post the following types of images: .gif, .jpg, .png and .bmp. Please be aware that the site cannot accept any images 4 MB in size or larger, and you will receive an error message if your photo is too large.

As outlined in the User Guidelines, you may not include images containing nudity, or obscene, lewd, excessively violent, harassing, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable subject matter.

Private Messages

What is a private message?

A private message is e-mail within the Zip06 community. You can send a private message to other users that is visible only to them. No private information, such as the user's e-mail address, is ever disclosed.

How do I send a private message?

Go to a Zip06 member's profile page. On the left of the screen under Options, click on the link that says "Send User A Private Message."

How do I read private messages sent to me?

You have to sign in to read your private messages. Click on the "Inbox" link in the top right-hand corner. You can also access your Inbox from your Zip06 member profile page.
